Ask any parent in Kerala about a child’s long cough, and you’ll hear the same thing: “Try Ayurveda.” I heard it growing up too, but I never really knew what an Ayurvedic clinic for children does. So I read up, and here’s what I understood.
A branch just for kids
Ayurveda has a section for children called Kaumarabhritya, covering babies right up to teenagers. The doctor doesn’t just look at the cough or rash. They ask about food, sleep and digestion, and they check the child’s Prakriti, a kind of body type. That’s why two kids with the same cold may be told different things.
Why parents go
Mostly for colds that keep coming back, skin rashes, poor appetite and constipation. Some also go for delayed milestones. Treatment is usually herbal medicine, oil massage and changes in food. For milestones, it’s meant to go alongside regular care, not replace it.
The first visit
It’s mostly a long talk about birth, feeding, sleep and past illnesses. Small problems may improve in a few weeks, and older ones take longer. If a clinic promises results overnight, I’d be careful.
One clinic I came across
SNA Ayurveda in Thrissur started in 1920. Their website says the pediatric department is led by Dr. M. G. Ramachandran, MD (Ayu), CCH (Paed.), Ph.D. I haven’t visited, so I’m only going by what they publish. You can read more on their Ayurvedic pediatric clinic in Kerala page.
